Etsy Offsite Ads: when the 15% fee still makes sense
Offsite Ads is not a platform fee — it is a customer-acquisition cost. The question is whether the sale would have happened without the ad, and whether the margin can absorb it.
The break-even formula
Your break-even Offsite Ads rate is the contribution margin before ads, divided by the total sale:
If the result is 40%, a 15% Offsite Ads fee leaves 25% of the sale as extra profit. If it is 10%, the 15% fee turns an attributed sale into a loss.
Worked example: a $50 item
Item $50, buyer pays $5 shipping, item cost $10, shipping cost $5. Etsy’s mandatory fees are $5.68, so the contribution before ads is $34.32 — 62.4% of the $55 sale.
| Scenario | Offsite Ads fee | Total fees | Profit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organic (no ads) | $0.00 | $5.68 | $34.32 |
| 12% Offsite Ads | $6.60 | $12.28 | $27.72 |
| 15% Offsite Ads | $8.25 | $13.93 | $26.07 |
Even at 15%, the attributed sale is profitable. But if the same buyer would have found you organically, the ad fee is pure margin loss. That is the trade-off the percentage alone does not show.
When to keep it on
- The product has a healthy contribution margin (roughly 35%+ before ads).
- You are trying to acquire new customers, not just re-sell to repeat buyers.
- The listing is new and needs external traffic to build sales history.
- The 12% rate applies and the numbers still work after returns.
When to opt out
- The contribution margin is below 15%, so an attributed sale is break-even or negative.
- Most of your sales come from repeat customers or direct traffic.
- The product has high return rates or customization costs that the ad fee does not account for.
The $10,000 rule
Shops with more than $10,000 in trailing 12-month sales are automatically enrolled in Offsite Ads and cannot opt out. Shops below that threshold can opt out. The rate is 15% for most shops and 12% for higher-volume shops.
