How Amazon FBA fees work in 2026
Amazon takes money in layers. The referral fee is a percentage of the total sales price — usually 15%, but 8% for electronics and 17% for apparel, with a $0.30 minimum. Then FBA fulfillment charges per unit by size tier and weight. On top of that, 2026 adds a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge on every FBA fulfillment fee, effective April 17, 2026.
Storage, inbound placement, prep, and advertising sit outside those two headline fees. That is why two sellers with the same 15% referral rate can have very different margins.
The 2026 changes that matter
- 3.5% fuel surcharge on FBA fulfillment fees in the US, Canada, and Remote Fulfillment with FBA; MCF and Buy with Prime followed on May 2, 2026.
- Fulfillment fee increases averaging about $0.08 per unit, with larger increases on some small standard and over-$50 items.
- Aged inventory surcharge starts at 181 days, not 365. Slow inventory gets expensive faster.
- Low-price FBA discount for products under $10, averaging $0.86 per unit.
- Referral percentages were frozen at 2025 levels for 2026 — one of the few stable lines.
Worked example: $29.99 product, $8 cost
Referral at 15% = $4.50. FBA fulfillment at $4.50 plus the 3.5% surcharge = $4.66. Storage $0.50, inbound $0.50, professional plan allocated at $0.40. Total Amazon fees = $10.56. After the $8 product cost, profit = $11.43 per unit, a 38.1% margin and 142.9% ROI on product cost.
What the calculator does not include
Returns and refund administration, inbound freight to the fulfillment center, prep-center fees, coupons, and storage overage are not modelled. Use the result as a per-unit planning number, then reconcile against your Settlements report.
Frequently asked questions
Does Amazon charge a referral fee on shipping?
Yes. The referral fee is calculated on the total sales price, which includes the item price, shipping, and gift wrap. Building “free shipping” into the item price does not reduce the referral fee.
What is the 3.5% FBA fuel surcharge?
Since April 17, 2026, Amazon applies a 3.5% surcharge on top of every FBA fulfillment fee in the US, Canada, and Remote Fulfillment with FBA. The calculator applies it automatically to the fulfillment fee you enter.
Why is my FBA fee different from the default?
FBA fulfillment fees depend on size tier, shipping weight, and the price band of the product. The default is a planning number; copy the exact fee for your ASIN from Seller Central’s revenue calculator or fee preview report.
Should I include advertising in the fee calculation?
Yes, if you run Sponsored Products. Advertising is not a mandatory Amazon fee, but it is a real cost of sale. Enter your typical PPC spend as a percentage of revenue to see the true margin.
