Etsy fees in 2026: listing, transaction, processing

Etsy is not one fee — it is three mandatory fees plus an optional ad fee. The order matters, and the shipping line is included in two of them.

The 30-second version

  • Listing fee: $0.20 per item, charged at listing, renewal, and when a unit sells from a multi-quantity listing.
  • Transaction fee: 6.5% of the item price plus shipping and gift wrap.
  • Payment processing: 3% + $0.25 (US) on the total the buyer pays.
  • Offsite Ads: 15%, or 12% for higher-volume shops, on attributed sales.
  • Etsy Plus: optional $10/month subscription, separate from per-sale fees.

How the three mandatory fees stack

On a $50 item with $5 shipping, the buyer pays $55. Etsy charges:

FeeCalculationAmount
Listing fee$0.20 per item$0.20
Transaction fee6.5% × $55$3.58
Payment processing3% × $55 + $0.25$1.90
Total mandatory fees$5.68
Net payout$49.32

The effective rate is 10.3% of the buyer’s total — higher than the 6.5% headline because processing and the flat fees are layered on top. On a $30 item with no shipping, the mandatory fees are about $3.30, or 11%.

Why shipping is in the fee base

Both the 6.5% transaction fee and the 3% processing fee apply to the total the buyer pays, including shipping. “Free shipping” does not avoid the fee; it moves the shipping cost into the item price, where it is still charged. The practical implication: price the item with shipping included only when the market supports it, and always run the fee math on the combined total.

The small-item trap

Two of Etsy’s fees are fixed: the $0.20 listing fee and the $0.25 processing component. On a $10 item, those two alone are 4.5% of revenue before the 6.5% and 3% percentages. That is why low-priced digital downloads and stickers need a different pricing model from $50 handmade goods — bundle them or raise the average order value.

Quick break-even formula: minimum price = (item cost + shipping cost + $0.45) ÷ (1 − 0.095 − your target margin). The 9.5% combines the 6.5% transaction fee and 3% processing; the $0.45 combines the listing and processing fixed fees.

Offsite Ads: a customer-acquisition cost

Offsite Ads is charged only when Etsy attributes a sale to its external advertising. The rate is 15% for most shops and 12% for shops that have sold more than $10,000 in the past 12 months. Shops under that threshold can opt out; larger shops are enrolled automatically.

On a $55 sale, a 15% Offsite Ads fee is $8.25 — more than the three mandatory fees combined. If the order would not have happened without the ad, that can still be profitable. The mistake is treating it as a permanent platform fee and pricing every listing as if it applies. Model organic and ad-attributed orders separately.

Pricing for a target margin

Suppose you want a 50% margin on a $55 sale with a $12 item cost and $5 shipping cost. Mandatory fees are $5.68, so profit is $55 − $12 − $5 − $5.68 = $32.32, a 58.8% margin. If you want exactly 50%, the minimum price is higher because the percentage fees scale with price:

Price = (cost + shipping + $0.45) ÷ (1 − 0.095 − 0.50) ≈ $17.45 ÷ 0.405 ≈ $43.09

That is the price where, after Etsy’s percentage fees and your costs, you keep 50 cents of every revenue dollar. The calculator does this iteratively for any target.

Five Etsy fee mistakes

  1. Using 6.5% as the total fee rate. Add processing and fixed fees; the real rate is closer to 10–11% before ads.
  2. Forgetting the listing fee renews. It is charged every four months and on each unit sold from a multi-quantity listing.
  3. Pricing low-value items without the flat fees. On a $10 item, $0.45 is 4.5% before percentages.
  4. Treating Offsite Ads as always-on. It applies to attributed sales only; do not bury it in every listing price.
  5. Ignoring refunds and cancellations. Etsy may retain processing fees or charge a refund adjustment; check the policy for your region.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage does Etsy take in 2026?

Etsy charges a 6.5% transaction fee, a 3% + $0.25 payment processing fee (US), and a $0.20 listing fee per item. Combined, the mandatory fees are roughly 9.5% plus $0.45 in flat fees per sale.

Does Etsy charge a fee on shipping?

Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee and the 3% + $0.25 processing fee are calculated on the total amount the buyer pays, including shipping and gift wrap.

How much are Etsy fees on a $30 item?

About $3.30: $0.20 listing + $1.95 transaction (6.5%) + $1.15 processing (3% + $0.25). That is an effective rate of roughly 11% before item cost and shipping.

Is Offsite Ads worth it?

Offsite Ads is a 15% fee (12% for higher-volume shops) on sales attributed to Etsy’s external advertising. It is closer to a customer-acquisition cost than a platform fee. If the sale would not have happened without the ad, it can still be profitable; model it separately from organic orders.
