How eBay fees work in 2026
eBay’s main selling fee is the final value fee. For most categories it is 13.6% of the total amount of the sale, up to $7,500 per item, plus a $0.40 per-order fee ($0.30 for orders of $10 or less). Above $7,500, the portion over the cap is charged at 2.35%.
“Total amount of the sale” is broader than most sellers expect: it includes the item price, shipping charged to the buyer, handling, and sales tax. That is why a “free shipping” listing does not escape the fee on shipping — the cost is simply inside the item price.
2026 eBay fee table (common categories)
| Category | No Store / Starter | Basic Store or higher |
|---|---|---|
| Most categories | 13.6% up to $7,500; 2.35% above | 12.7% up to $2,500; 2.35% above |

| Guitars & basses | 6.7% | 6.7% |
Three things sellers miss
- The fee on sales tax. If eBay collects tax on your sale, the final value fee is calculated on the tax too. The calculator shows that hidden cost separately.
- The fee on shipping. Charging $15 shipping does not escape the fee; the 13.6% applies to the shipping line as well.
- Store discounts have caps. A Basic Store lowers most categories to 12.7% up to $2,500, but the discount does not apply to the portion above that. High-ticket sellers need to model the cap.
Worked example: $50 item, $5 shipping, $10 cost
Total sale = $55. Final value fee at 13.6% = $7.48. Per-order fee = $0.40. Total fees = $7.88. Net payout = $47.12. After a $10 item cost and a $5 label, profit = $32.12. The effective fee rate on item + shipping is 14.3% — higher than the headline 13.6%, because of the flat per-order fee.
Frequently asked questions
Does eBay charge a final value fee on shipping?
Yes. eBay calculates its final value fee on the total amount of the sale, which includes the item price, shipping charged to the buyer, handling, and sales tax. Offering free shipping moves the cost into the item price but does not avoid the fee.
What is the $0.40 per-order fee?
Most eBay sales carry a $0.40 per-order fee on top of the percentage final value fee. Orders of $10 or less pay $0.30, and sneakers sold for $150 or more do not pay the per-order fee.
Is an eBay Store subscription worth it?
A Basic or higher Store lowers the final value fee in many categories — 12.7% vs 13.6% for most categories, and deeper discounts in electronics and laptops. Whether it pays off depends on your monthly sales; the subscription itself is a fixed monthly cost, not a per-sale fee.
Are Promoted Listings fees included?
Yes, if you enter an ad rate. Promoted Listings General charges your ad rate on the total sale amount, including shipping and sales tax, when the sale comes from an ad click within the attribution window.
