Amazon FBA size tiers and fulfillment fees

FBA fulfillment is priced by size tier and shipping weight, not by category. A fraction of an inch can move a product into a more expensive tier — and the 2026 fuel surcharge stacks on top.

Why size tier matters more than category

Two products with the same referral rate can have very different FBA fees. A small standard item might cost around $3 to fulfill; a large bulky item can cost $10 or more; oversize items can exceed $20. The tier is determined by packaged dimensions and shipping weight, including the dimensional weight for larger items.

Planning ranges by size tier

Size tierTypical fulfillment feeWhat to watch
Small standard~$3.00–$3.50Often the cheapest tier; watch the weight limit
Large standard~$3.50–$6.50Most common tier for consumer products
Large bulky~$9–$15Dimensional weight and overmax fees
Extra-large / oversize~$20–$60+Freight, overmax, and storage costs
These are planning ranges, not quotes. The exact fee depends on packaged dimensions, shipping weight, and the current rate card. Use Seller Central’s fee preview for the ASIN.

The 2026 additions

  • A 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge on every FBA fulfillment fee, effective April 17, 2026.
  • Fulfillment fee increases averaging about $0.08 per unit, with larger increases on some small standard and over-$50 items.
  • An overmax handling fee of $17–$25 per unit for items exceeding standard size or weight thresholds.
  • A low-price FBA discount averaging $0.86 per unit for products under $10.

How to estimate your FBA fee

Start with the packaged dimensions, not the product dimensions. Measure the box or poly bag you will actually ship, including any inserts. Then check the fee preview in Seller Central for the exact ASIN and price band. If the product is borderline between two tiers, test a smaller package before your next production run.

The packaging lever

A product that barely exceeds a size threshold can pay significantly more than one that fits comfortably in the tier below. Reducing box dimensions, removing inserts, or switching to a poly bag can move the item into a cheaper tier — sometimes saving more than a supplier negotiation.

Frequently asked questions

How much does FBA fulfillment cost in 2026?

It depends on size tier and weight. Small standard items are often around $3–$3.50, large standard around $3.50–$6.50, large bulky around $9–$15, and oversize can exceed $20. Use Seller Central for the exact fee.

What is the overmax handling fee?

A $17–$25 per-unit surcharge for items that exceed standard size or weight thresholds. It stacks on top of the base fulfillment fee.
